Partial die cutting

Today I am back to show you my make for a new challenge with BożenA. It was my turn to choose the topic and this time I opted for a technique rather than a topic and I chose Partial Die Cutting. The purpose of this technique is to take two dies and only partially cut each one so that one ends up with a new shape.

I went through my stash of dies and decided that this would be a good opportunity to create a Christmas card. I used this oval die and this candle die that you can see cut out in their entirety in the picture below.

I cut the candle out another time out of white craftfoam. My intention was to use the foam piece as a stamp so that I could stamp the shape onto the candle side of my joined die cut to provide definition to the left side. I then cut the oval out first with my cutting plate ending at the spot where the two dies joined and then I cut out the candle from the other direction, again not putting the plate over the area of the dies that I did not want to cut. Be sure to only put one die on the cardstock at a time, do not stack the dies - they will be damaged.

Using the foam die cut that I had previously cut, I stamped Versamark ink onto the candle side of my merged die cut and then coated it with gold embossing powder. I stamped the sentiment in Versafine Onyx Black ink and coated it with clear embossing powder.

Using silver foil cardstock, I created a cardpanel which I embossed with a Darice Snowflake embossing folder.I adhered the panel to a dark blue cardbase. I glued the foam "stamp" that I had made to the back of the candle and then added foam tape to the back of the oval side so that my partial die cut focal point would be popped up off my card for some dimension.

I am excited to see BożenA's project and I would ask that you head over to her blog to see her partial die cut creation. Please leave her a comment while you are there.

  1. I knew your card would be amazing. However, I did not expect that you will surprise me so much! Brilliant to treat the die as a stamping die. This allowed to beautifully define the uncut candle-shaped portion. Your inventiveness is surprising and the combination of a total of two dies and a punch with a die allowed for a stunning effect. Big WOW, Monica!!!
